You already know that it’s important to have goals for your company. Only by constantly moving towards those goals will your business grow and thrive. But did you know that your employees should also have personal goals of their own when it comes to their work?

If your employees don’t have a goal to work towards, you might see an overall lapse in productivity and a sink in company morale. Your employees will feel less motivated to stick with your team and you might experience a high turnover rate.

Having concrete goals keeps your employees engaged in their roles and helps them adapt quickly to the changes that come as your company grows. This, in turn, will help your business stay on-track to successful growth.

Make your company mission clear.

Employees need to see their jobs with your company as more than a means to an end. If they’re going to contribute to the growth of your company, then they need to be engaged and have a sense of purpose.

Each member on your team should know exactly how what they do has a direct impact on the success of the entire company. When they realize they play a role that counts, your employees will feel needed and appreciated and motivated to set and reach new goals.

All of this starts with communicating your company mission to your employees. They need to understand the values and goals of your company. You may have to go back to the drawing board to clarify the message you want your team to understand and find ways to communicate it clearly throughout all levels of your company.

Work with your employees.

Don’t leave it to your employees to figure out new goals on their own. They may not be sure which goals are pertinent to their role and skill set. Your employees need your guidance, so sit down with them one-by-one to chat.

Discuss past goals your employees have met, what new goals they feel are reasonable, and how you can help them reach them. Offer a reward system for reaching certain milestones, break down large goals into smaller ones, and set reasonable deadlines for meeting them.

Make frequent progress checks.

You don’t have to wait for the annual review to find out how easily your employees are reaching their goals. Check in often to see how they’re doing. You don’t want them feeling nervous about your progress checks; instead, focus on encouraging them and helping them. You won’t know if or why they are struggling to meet their assignments unless you take the initiative to find out.

With careful planning and open communication, you can work with your employees to set reasonable goals that will bring your whole team closer to reaching your company goals.
