Setting Up an X Account

Setting up an X account for your company is relatively easy, but there are a few things to consider before you even get started. First, you should decide if you will use your name, the name of your company, or a brand name owned by your company as your X account handle. Come up with several alternate name choices in case you can’t secure your first choice.

Here are some basic steps for setting up an account on X:

  1. Enter a name for your account, your email address or phone number, and date of birth. Your X account is tied to a single email address or phone number. If you want to have multiple X accounts at some point, you will need to use a different email address for each account.
  2. You’ll receive a verification code and will be asked to add a password.
  3. Next, you can add your profile image. Your company logo might work. Make sure you use a square shaped file that is 400x400 pixels. Your profile photo will appear within a circle once uploaded.
  4. You can then set up your X handle that will be part of your X web address and will appear after the @ sign when people address you. Your X handle should be easy to spell, easy to remember, and above all, in line with the image you want to project professionally. Keep in mind your first choice or even second and third choices for a handle may not be available, so the more relevant handle options you have on your list, the better.
  5. Next, choose if you want to receive Notifications from X on your mobile device or not.
  6. X prompts you to select three topics of interest such as Arts & Culture, Business & Finance, Technology, and Science. Then you can pick subcategories and additional topics of interest.
  7. After that, you are prompted to follow one or more accounts from a pre-selected list. The more people you follow, the more you may experience information overload. If you don’t have time to read a lot of content, be selective about whom you follow. Follow people and companies in keeping with your interests or industry or actual connections, as well as people with whom you’d like to connect with to network and do business.
  8. Then you’ll be sent to the login page to log back in.
  9. Once logged in, you’ll be sent to the home page where you can post your messages and peruse the “For You” feed based on your interests. You can also toggle to the feed with messages from only the accounts you follow.

The last steps for setting up your X account is to customize it with a profile photo, bio, a header or banner, and, if you have paid for a Premium X subscription, on-brand theme colors.

For your profile image, pick something that is clear and representative, such as your company logo or a photo of yourself if you are the face of the company. Most people prefer to see actual people in profile photos. Cartoon characters and other artistic renderings are also popular. If you are posting as your company, people are also used to seeing a company logo as a profile image.

Along with your account bio, you can link to your company’s website or any other site in the URL designated field. Some companies create an X landing page on their company website specifically to greet visitors from X. A landing page gives you the opportunity to clearly articulate who you are and what you do, as well as lead visitors to the places on your website where they can act, such as to inquire about hiring you or to buy your products.

When you’re ready to post your first messages, make sure that they reflect your brand and keep both your business goals and your audience in mind. Before you start posting, take time to see what people are sharing on the platform. Get a feel for the discussions and topics that are popular and trending. You can view trending topics in the “What’s Happening” sidebar or click Explore on the main navigation menu to access other popular topics.

If you find content on X that you think might be of interest to your followers, use the “Repost” icon to add it to your feed. You can like a post by clicking on the heart icon, save it with the bookmark icon, comment on it using the talk bubble icon, or share it to a direct message or via text message or email.

Take your time to learn how to use X properly to get the most out of the platform and to market your business more effectively. Plan out some of your posts, but also use X regularly to interact with others and respond to questions or other messages directed at you. Always take care to stay on brand.
